Pinewoods once again settle for draw

by Chief Correspondent

The pitch was dry and the top was already breaking up. Showers were forecast and conditions were overcast. Beechwood lost the toss and were asked to bat. Woody was unavailable for selection (something about free beer), so Bradley Hill was skippering.

Freeman and Kelly opened for Beechwood and found scoring difficult as there was a bit in the pitch for the bowlers. Clive Lipscombe in particular was able to find some extra bounce with the ball. The score had moved to 18 from 10 overs when Freeman was caught off Bashford.

Warner came in and to begin with was only dealing in singles; Kelly on the other hand was looking very positive and was starting to drive over the top. Both batsmen were looking for quick singles, although not always showing great judgement in when to go for them. Warner was starting to open up now and Pinewoods were kindly feeding him his favourite - short on the leg side.

Both batsmen were going well now and rotating the strike, the game was slipping away from Pinewoods. Clive Lipscombe was brought back for a second spell after a fine opening burst and was duly dispatched for 13 off his first over back. Warner was finally caught at point off Lipscombe having shared in a stand of 134. Steve 'Creepy' Crawley was next in and he and Kelly quickly showed that they had not batted together before with some interesting calling. Kelly was out next also caught for a fine 61. Hill came in and struck a brisk 28 and Beechwood closed on 186 for 4 from 40 overs.

A heavy shower came down during the tea interval but did not delay Pinewood's innings.

Cowell and McCrea opened the bowling for Beechwood and Cowell soon picked up the wicket of Lock, caught by Hill in the slips. Cowell then returned the compliment taking a fine one-handed catch diving forward off Hill's bowling to remove Glen Lipscombe. Savory's leg spin was introduced to the attack and he quickly picked up the wicket of Bashford, Cooksley taking a smart catch at silly mid-on.

Savory was causing problems and Clive Lipscombe holed out to Robinson at mid off. Morton was now in and he was joined by a young lad called Jack Thomson, all of a sudden the Beechwood bowlers seemed unable to bowl on the stumps and several overs passed before Cooksley got rid of Morton (someone who has played for us before but obviously we didn't talk to him as he was playing for the opposition). Time was running out for Beechwood and things were getting desperate, as was highlighted by wicket-keeper Makin who advised the young batsman not to step out of his crease or he would "'ave him". Young Jack finally perished to Crawley's off-spin and the game fizzled out into a draw, Pinewoods finishing on 94 for 7 from 42 overs.

A decent performance by Beechwood but always a difficult game to win as Pinewoods never really attempted to chase the total that had been set.

Team: Cooksley, Cowell, Crawley, Freeman, Kelly,
