Tony Freeman skippered the opening match of our tour of Mallorca, in a setting that initially seemed reminiscent of a spaghetti western. In time honoured tradition he lost the toss and Wealdstone elected to bat. The match began in inauspicious fashion as Sean Quinn failed to prevent what appeared to be a straightforward stop at third man and allowed the first ball of the match to go for 4. The opening batsmen seemed to gain encouragement from this and took 15 from the first 3 overs, before the opening bowlers and the fielders began to come to terms with the alien conditions and slow the scoring rate. Woodward made the initial breakthrough, with the aid of a neat catch by Makin behind the timbers. However the bowlers joy was short lived, as the number 3 seemed intent on playing a shot a ball, and hit 3 successive boundaries. However this was to prove to be only a brief cameo, as Patel removed him with his very first delivery, with a ball that turned sharply and hit middle stump.

Most of the fielders were being cautious with their fielding, due to the rock hard surface of the rolled sand outfield. But at the first given opportunity, Sean 'Mad dog' Quinn proved himself to be a different breed, by launching himself into a sliding pick-up when chasing down a ball at long off. Dodgy continued to bemuse the new batsmen, and was well supported by the experienced Dick Page, who eventually lured the other opening batsmen down the track and provided Keith with a comfortable second victim.

At the halfway stage of the Wealdstone innings they were only 59 for 3, and probably felt the to accelerate after the drinks break. However, both batsmen were almost immediately dismissed by Patel, as he took 2 wickets in one over, and finished with the amazing figures of 8-5-4-3. Much to the surprise of some of the spectators in the touring party, a double bowling change was made, bringing Cunningham and Quinn into the attack. This seemed to be very much to the new batsmen's liking, and they plundered 52 runs in 8 overs. However, the reintroduction of the opening bowlers once again stemmed the flow of runs, to the extent that Clark ran himself out on 49 (not even Brad has managed that yet)! Woodward then claimed 2 wickets, in the final over of the innings, although he failed to convert his opportunity to claim a hat trick.

The Beechwood innings was opened by the Sheen Park connection of Treve Brown and Sean Quinn. The manner of there partnership suggested that they had an early dinner appointment that evening as 42 runs were taken from the first 3 overs. Both batsmen were striking the ball very well, with Brown being particularly destructive in hitting boundaries to all corners of the ground. As the field became more defensive, both players seemed to take a bit of a breather by taking a series of strolled singles that were readily available.
Once the century partnership had been achieved, Brown once again upped a gear and launched another ferocious assault on the Wealdstone bowlers, and completed his own century in just 48 balls. He then retired his innings having struck eleven 4's and five 6's. This brought Beechwood legend Colin Robinson to the crease, sporting the 'Rambo' look that had been absent for the last couple of years. As usual he caused mayhem from his very first ball, running a single from a dropped catch. He then ran 2 byes at the other end, the keeper seemingly mesmerised by the manner of stroke being played in front of him! However, the next delivery struck him on the pad and the Councillor wasted no time in raising the deadly digit.

Cunningham then came to the wicket and played a selfless innings, by blocking everything that came his way in order to assist Quinn to reach a personal milestone. Quinn levelled the scores with a single, and then after a few nervy balls, swept a ball to the boundary in order to finish 50 not out and give Beechwood a winning start to the tour.
