Match Report by Broadway's Ian Thurman
Despite a plucky fielding display defending a total of 108, Broadway's season begun with a home defeat by 5 wickets. With a heavy fall of rain an hour and a half before start of play, the toss was an important one to win. The Beechwood captain won the all important toss, and elected to field and put Broadway in on a drying track.
With some accurate bowling from both ends Beechwood never allowed BCC to dictate with the bat, and runs were even harder to come by with the long damp grass in the outfield meaning that every run had to taken by the batsmen rather than rely on boundary's.
With the pressure maintained by Beechwood's attack, Broadway's innings never took off and wickets fell at regular intervals with few partnerships being forged. BCC skipper Michaels tried to lead the way but was out on 22 after edging one to slip. Mike Trewin produced a gritty 21 in the face of some fine bowling by Beechwood's spinner, Savory.
Turning the ball both ways Savory never allowed BCC to snack on his bowling, returning fine figures of 8-5-4-3. Backed by Bates (5-1-8-0) and Cowell (8-2-13-1), Broadway made a late flurry with Clifton knocking a fine 27 and some terrier like running between the wickets by Purcell (9 n.o) to post a total of 108.
Mant and Hamilton were given the green light to try and strike an early blow for BCC with the ball. With some steady seam bowling both were just beating the outside edge, but Beechwood's total ticked slowly but steadily upwards. Then, after dropping a chance that was fired back to him, Mant dived low to stop a fierce drive only deflect the ball onto the stumps to run out Kelly at the non-strikers end for 10.
Mant 8-3-29-0 and Hamilton 6-2-14-0 toiled but were unrewarded with the ball, while Shaw with his loopy leggies bowled well to end up with 6-0-24-2. Michaels, after handing the keeping gloves to Mant, bowled a tidy line and length for figures of 7-1-14-0.
Warner for Beechwood looked to try and increase the scoring rate, but perished on 18 with a caught and bowled for Gladwin (7-1-19-1), rewarded for his disciplined line, length and pace. With overs ticking by, it looked like BCC may pull off a miracle win. But Freeman, who carried his bat for a superb unbeaten 40 with some elegant drives, and Woodward (17 n.o) saw Beechwood home with 5 wickets and 2 overs to spare for a deserved victory.
Beechwood proved to be a sociable bunch of lads, sinking several pints in the Alma after an enjoyable game, and hopefully the first of many more between the two clubs.
